Coolest Things I learned - February 2021

1. Did you know that there was 6000 years of gap between invention of a wheel and putting those wheels on suitcases? Even moon landing was 3 decades before. Nicholas Taleb in his book 'Antifragile' refers this as a human imagination(or lack of) #GoodReads 2. New word I liked from my kids book she read to me called Diva & Flea. Flâneur - Someone(Somecat from a book) who wanders to see what there is to see. Great flâneur has seen everything, but still looks for more, because there is always more to discover. *The word is mentioned in Antifragile as well :) Coincidence like this makes me realize, when you are looking for something, universe conspires in bringing it closer to you.  3. Communication Principle: KISS which stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid I like how this principle has a wider application in other things of life. 4. Changing the world does not have to be about technology. An inspiring journey of founder of Planet Abled -  Neha Arora You must check this. 5. Z...

Most important life skills that no one will teach you

Living a good life is every person's goal. However select few make an actual effort in making it better every day. Relationships, Health, Wealth, happiness are not single day or one time event. Everyday efforts though add up and eventually journey itself becomes better every passing day.  Though most significant things that matter to you are not taught in any school or by a teacher. You have to learn on your own. Here are few things which everyone needs to learn on their own, How to set Morning Routines you look forward to? Simplest #LifeHack Quiet time, exercise, tea/coffee, newspaper, meditation, reading, writing it can be anything you like and enjoy. Choose that and repeat it. Losing a morning thinking where should I start my day from is sure way of losing a day too. So set your wake-up routine. Only yo u can find out things that make you energized, productive & happy for the day. Don't worry about successful peoples morning routines & their wake up times. Find yo...

Coolest Things I Learned - 1

- The Fax Machine was invented in 1843. That makes it 178 years old.  - If you needed a reason why Fasting is good for you, here is one. When you starve yourself for food, it is the bad protein that are broken down first and recycled by your body. Process called an autophagy. From truly evolutionary concept, body kills weak, ageing cells first in the process of fasting. Hence fasting is good for healthy body. - Everything you say to Siri is sent to Apple, analyzed. But that's not it. Apple may keep this data, anonymized for up to two years. Amazon too stores your Alexa data. Other day my kid asked Alexa, "Can you smell me from there?" I worry about Amazon ;) - After Apple, Google, IBM, Netflix and many others, Companies are changing the policy to accommodate hires without a college degree. Tesla joins them too.  - This is how Economic powers shaped in last 40 years. As per World Bank & IMF data. Simply fascinating. G20 Economies Nominal GDP (1960-2020)

2020: The Year we will never forget

Image
2020: The year we will never forget We  #learned . What a devastating year it has been! Losses that can't be articulated, understood and beyond measures. We went to war, only this time all being on the same side. For me, it started with losing sense of time and screen time shooting up by 400%. Thankfully being around family helped me get a grip back. April for me was timeless ;) (Surprisingly some people are still waiting for things to get back to normal to change temporary habits of late sleeping, midnight snacking and binge watching) We learned, things that seemed important are not that important. We learned, relationships that seemed important are not that important. We learned, agility of the plan is more important than details of the plan. We learned, workplace is not 'the place' we commute everyday to and from. We learned, we don't know lots of things.(Or do we know anything?....) We learned, to enjoy small things, deeply. We learned, to look at others different...

Serendipity

Serendipity that life throws always amazes me.  Early this week kid wanted to read me a book, Flea and Diva . I happily agreed. I came across a new word which I immediately fell in love with.  Flâneur - Someone(Somecat from a book) who wanders to see what there is to see. Great flâneur has seen everything, but still looks for more, because there is always more to discover.   Little did I know that same word will come across in a book that I picked up reading, Antifragile . This is not it.  It is second occurrence of this week. Before Antifragile I was reading Trevor Noah's biography Born a Crime . In one of the chapters in a book, he was telling a story and wanted to highlight some accent. I was thinking while reading that piece how difficult it is to convey accent, tone in writing. A day later I came across an article in HBR quoting exact same thing.  It's always a relief to find a thing you are looking for. But my god, joy of discovering something new is...

English is not same everywhere

I should have known this. India has more than 20 recognized and many more unrecognized languages. One language have many dialects and same words can mean different things. 'Tu'(You in English) in Marathi is known for closeness of relation, is considered offensive, disrespectful in Hindi.  How could have things be not different for English as well? Though I still get amazed when I learn peculiarities of languages. English they teach in India has British influence, which also reflects in spoken language. When I first came to US(2011), we went out for coffee. US TV, movies, Starbucks had hyped the coffee of this country for me. I was waiting to taste coffee here and in my mind I had already imagined it would be close to the 'Drink of Gods'. 2011 my reference to best coffee was Nescafe Gold made in whole milk and little sugar. Here is how the conversation went, So lady on the counter asks me, "what will it be?"  I say, "Coffee"  She asks, "Cream?...

How I learn from my kid

My life changed for good when my daughter was born. Its been learning everyday since then. My most recent learnings about life, people and things in general are from my kid and watching her learn/grow. Here are few things which I have learned from my kid, Be happy WITHOUT A REASON.  Kid is so enviously happy about everyday, its me who wants to find a reason to be happy(like any other adults) Every morning she asks me 'are you excited?' now after so many years of practice answer is yes. I repeat the question and ask why? (just so that we are on same page of being excited about today 😛) Today kid wanted me to be happy because it was her classmate Ethans' birthday. Okay. Happy Birthday Ethan!! Find work. I have never seen my kid doing nothing. She is always doing something, keeping herself occupied. It is different that her being busy is worrisome for whole other reasons for me.  Ask. Ask questions. lot of it. Nothing seems obvious once you start questioning.  How to draw b...

Learning is fun

Kid is learning to read a clock.  So far our wall clock has shown time we haven't heard before, 86, 33, 27, 95.... 😅 To get her enough practice both of us randomly keep asking her time. Like when we have breakfast or meals, play or watch TV.  Today is pretty exciting time travel for us, We finished our exercise at 86. Like most of normal people, we had breakfast at 9:15. We finished reading at 11:8  Lunch at 33 Kid had school at 1:45 Playtime at 27 Times are changing fast. I am scared to have dinner in 3 digits of time ;) Learning is fun. Specially when you learn with kids, every time you too end up learning something new with them. Kids have such a fresh and original perspective to everything. I envy her original mind. Go MyStar! I enjoy living in these times. Will keep you posted tomorrow at 78. Cheers!

The hard stuff about Hard stuff

I was nine years old when I first went to the Post office. Well at least it was first  work  visit. Post office was right next to my house and everyone in that post office knew me. This happens when you live in a small town and when your mom regularly treats staff members with tea-biscuits. I had been to that post office countless times before. Staff was kind they would let me play with papers, ink stamp, sometimes appoint me to even sort the dispatch. It was fun. Work visit was obviously to do dad's work, which my brother used to do earlier. Any work that could happen without my dad/mom visiting in person to Post office since then was done either by my brother or me. It was fun.  I was 12 years old when I first went to the Bank. Dad took me with him, explained me Deposits/Withdrawal, counters and introduced me to few people. Unlike post office not everyone knew me, staff was lets say, less friendly. It was 90's, it was a public sector bank and still known for their staff...
